Fireplace & Wood Burner Inspection Services

HETAS is the official body recognised by Government to approve biomass and solid fuel domestic heating appliances, fuels and services, including the registration of competent installers and servicing businesses.

Customers using a contractor should eventually recieve a Certificate of Compliance as the installer should notify HETAS within 7-10 days of completion of any installation work. This is of vital importance in demonstrating that the installation was carried out by a competent installer working for a HETAS registered business and complies with the relevant Building Regulations. The information on the certificate is used to record your installation, and used to notify your Local Authority Building Control Department (LABC) of the work that was undertaken, this is a LEGAL requirement. This ‘self certification’ by competent Registered Installers takes the place of a Local Authority Building Notice which could cost you a significant amount of money and is vital for building insurance once you have installed a wood burner or fire.

Home Sellers Compliancy Inspection Service;
This service is for home sellers and/or their buyers to check that a current installation is compliant to HETAS and Building Regulations Approved Document J (ADJ). We conduct a thorough inspection of the completed installation, from constructional hearth to the terminal, checking for any sign of compliancy or safety issues. This can take some hours and may involve roof access but after final smoke draw tests and draught flue gauge readings, we can complie a written report detailing our findings and recommendations to bring the installation up to regs. De-commissioning and re-commissioning the installation once the modifications have been made and checked.

Home Owners Safety Inspection Service;
This service is for home owners that currently have a wood burner or open fire and are concerned about the safety and legality of the installation. Or are just generally concerned about water staining on breasts, leaning pots or smoking back and down draft problems - believe me, we've seen many dangerous installations, so please don't hesitate to get in contact if you feel something is not right!

Carbon Monoxide Awareness

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless, tasteless, poisonous gas produced by incomplete burning of carbon-based fuels, including gas, oil, wood and coal. Carbon-based fuels are safe to use. It is only when the fuel does not burn properly that excess CO is produced, which is poisonous.  When CO enters the body, it prevents the blood from bringing oxygen to cells, tissues, and organs.

You can't see it, taste it or smell it but CO can kill quickly without warning. According to the HSE statistics every year around 7 people die from CO poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues that have not been properly installed, maintained or that are poorly ventilated. Levels that do not kill can cause serious harm to health if breathed in over a long period. In extreme cases paralysis and brain damage can be caused as a result of prolonged exposure to CO. Increasing public understanding of the risks of CO poisoning and taking sensible precautions could dramatically reduce this risk.
Carbon monoxide can be produced by any combustion appliance, including those that burn fossil fuels e.g. oil, wood and coal.  If you have one of these appliances you should make sure that it is serviced and maintained by a competent person and the chimney is regularly swept.

So please check your CO detector now - Press the test button, then check its expiry date and standard (BSEN50291)
